There was once The Monarch - the most English tea room in Turku! The Monarch was thought up as a celebration of a culture that the owners and the team hold very dear: the culture of personal service. We believed in going out of our way to create a memorable experience for you, our loyal or occasional customers. And the feedback shows we have succeeded.
We would have wanted to pass on the baton to someone willing to carry on our work - and our dream. Alas, no one has come along. But, as someone said once, everything happens for a reason. Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can come together. The team must move on, to even bigger challenges. All that is left is the hope that many of you will carry with you for a long time the memories we built together - so will we. And that someone else will one day bring a bit of England again to these parts of the world. After all: there will always be an England :) We thank you for trusting us and for helping us build from scratch a genuine, cozy, fabulous tearoom. This was the story... Our signature product is the Classical Afternoon Tea, served from 1 to 7 p.m., with its flavourful finger sandwiches and delicious warm scones topped with Monarch's special clotted cream. We offer cream teas, coffee, cakes and sandwiches all day, and all freshly prepared in-house. On weekend mornings you can also enjoy English breakfast or our own Monarch breakfast, accompanied by sparkling wine. On special event evenings you can enjoy classical or signature cocktails nibbling on finger food with your friends while listening to thematic music. It’s not ‘fast food’ and sometimes, especially on busy days, there may be a bit of a wait for your order. It could probably be done quicker, and cheaper, but it would not be as good. As we are also fans of Culture, we have strived to bring that aspect into the room. The grand piano will sound for Afternoon Tea and at weekends; a wall is reserved for young artist photographers to exhibit their work in collaboration with the Peri Photographic Centre; there is a small stage where young artists are encouraged to perform at different times; and there will be occasional stand-up and other shows. In addition, we will have special nights when guests and friends will discuss art, philosophy, literature or politics, all in a spirit of civilised debate. We wanted to create a space where service is the main focus, following as strictly as possible the rigorous rules of English etiquette, yet the atmosphere should be cosy and relaxed. That should give you an idea of what to expect: both protocol and a homely atmosphere, delicious home-made dishes, a quirky menu, welcoming staff, friendly customers, and a wide variety of art, from live piano and string concerts to photo exhibitions and stand-up shows. Turku is only two hours from Helsinki by train, and only 3-4 hours from London on a plane. So let's hope you have the opportunity to visit us soon. We look forward to seeing old and new friends. –– The Monarch's Team
